Fine Dinnerware and How It Differs From Casual Dinnerware

Fine dinnerware has only been a popular household item for the last 200 years. With origins in ancient China, these plates, bowls, teacups, and more were introduced to the European and American markets in the 19th century.

These place settings, which can also be called fine china, differ in several unique ways from common and casual dinnerware. Fine dinnerware is made from ceramic clay and fired at much higher temperatures than casual items. In fact, this high temperature firing ensures that the pieces will be porous and lightweight. If a person were to hold a china plate up to a light, he or she should be able to see his or her hand through the plate. In that way, fine dinnerware is much more fragile than common dinnerware and it is not safe, nor recommended, to be washed in a dishwasher.

Additionally, because of the higher temperature needed to form these items, china sets will typically only be offered in a few colors, most likely white or beige. Colors cannot be safely applied to fine dinnerware as the high firing temperatures will not allow colors to adhere to the dishes.

Fine dinnerware is a common wedding gift for newly married couples. Indeed, engaged couples will often register their preferred china sets at department and specialty stores. These sets typically feature a five piece setting consisting of a dinner plate, a salad plate, a butter plate, a teacup, and a saucer.

These items can be more expensive than common dinnerware pieces; however, these china sets will often become heirlooms in families and be passed down from generation to generation. In this way, people view fine dinnerware as an investment rather than a casual purchase.
